Contemporary reality

Marín’s abstract painting references architecture, landscape, identity, sacred geometry, and uses the languages of color and structure.  As a Latino artist, his intention is to further the discussion on abstraction, moving it from formalist, reductivist proposals to a more richly layered vision that renders his personal sensibility.

traditional practices

Marin works also works with Artesania, Mexican craft art, to maintain, transmit and celebrate his traditions.  He produces varying scale Dia de Muertos’ ofrendas by using and creating Mexican artesanias, in particular, papel picado, clay, papel mâché, retablos, dioramas and sugar skulls.  In 2019, he created and installed a colossal ofrenda for the North Carolina Museum of Art’s exhibition, “Frida, Diego and the Mexican Modernists”, which drew more than 100,000 people and had more than 31,000 visitors interacting with his ofrenda work.

I have studied at Cornell University; California State University, Hayward; Parsen’s School of Design; and the Art Student League of New York. Peter Marin is one of the most effective and motivational teachers I have ever worked with. I have devoured the contents of all of the courses I have taken with Peter. More importantly, I have relearned how to think about art, artists, and history. I am most grateful that I have learned grace toward myself and my peers as we share our artistic journeys. It is unheard of for students of any level of ability and interest to be able to study with a master teacher, but that is what is available with Peter Marin.

As a professional illustrator, I wanted to hone other skills as a lifelong artist. Specifically, I wanted access to knowledge that would unlock the best painter I could become. When I started taking classes with Peter Marin, I could see right away that I had landed in exactly the right place. My ideas of a painting class went right out the window and I was delighted to challenge my preconceptions. Peter Marin dedicates himself to the students in his room with the highest regard and intentionality. In addition to attentive instruction, he creates the occasion for an artist to be in a safe community. My ability to express my creative voice has grown exponentially and directly parallel to my strength as a person.
